As a tropical country, Fiji has two seasons: wet (rainy) and dry seasons. April is at the end of the wet season, also sometimes called Fiji's summer. Statistically, March is much less wet than the first few months of the year. You should expect rain every day, but it's unlikely to be as heavy as in January through March.
The chance of cyclones in April is also much less than between January and March. While unseasonal cyclones can happen, there's less risk that these dangerous tropical storms will disrupt your travel to Fiji in April. Even so, buy flexible flights and accommodation if possible, and be prepared to change your plans with a few days' notice if you end up being in the path of an approaching cyclone.
Being "summer," April is also hot and humid in Fiji. When it's not raining, the sun can be scorching. Although temperatures are fairly uniform year-round in Fiji, expect high temperatures of up to 84°F (29°C) in April.
Crowds & Costs
The rainy season, in general, is the low season for travel to Fiji, and April is commonly a quiet month. You won't see too many other travelers, making this a great time to visit if you're on a tight budget or seeking a peaceful getaway surrounded by natural beauty. April is a good month to look for flight and accommodation bargains.
Where to Go
Although April is the low season for travel, you can still enjoy an idyllic beach vacation during this month. Head to the drier west coast of Viti Levu island, where many resorts are located, to take advantage of the conditions. White-sand Natadola Beach is popular for snorkeling, surfing, and horseback riding and is often said to be the best beach on Viti Levu.
If you're interested in going further afield, hop on a short flight from Nadi to Fiji's third-largest island, Taveuni, east of Vanua Levu. Nicknamed the Garden Isle because of its lush greenery, a third of Taveuni falls within the Bouma National Heritage Park. A great activity to enjoy in April is hiking to the impressive Tavoro Falls, which will be in full flow this month toward the end of the rainy season.
What to Do
If you make it to Taveuni, consider staying at a local homestay instead of (or as well as) a resort. You'll experience genuine Fijian hospitality this way and learn more about the famously friendly country away from the sanitized resorts. Living quarters are usually simple but comfortable. Your hosts will likely take you on a tour of their village, introduce you to the village chief, and invite you to participate in a kava ceremony.
Closer to the beach resorts of western Viti Levu, take a half- or full-day safari tour of the Sigatoka River on Viti Levu's southwest coast. Enjoy the refreshing breeze from a jet boat ride up the river into the island's jungle-covered interior. Visit a local village and enjoy a cultural performance there. The river is the main way of accessing parts of the interior, including the infamous Naihehe Cave. You can visit these huge caves on a separate tour. They were used by Fiji's last known tribe of cannibals in the 19th century, and you can still see their ritual altar.
