Sharon Louthian

American by birth and Moroccan-Berber by marriage, I first traveled to Morocco as a tourist and fell in love with the country and its people (one in particular). Since my initial visit, I have traveled extensively throughout the country and especially enjoy discovering secret places off of the beaten path. Together with Abderrahman Idrissi, my Moroccan husband who has over 20 years experience in the tourism industry, we enlisted the help of his brothers (who serve as our in-country tour managers) to create Morocco Immersion Tours & Adventures. As a family business, we enjoy developing relationships with our guests that continue beyond their trips to Morocco and our goal is for our guests to leave with a little of our love for the country and its people.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"People always ask me what there is to do in Morocco and I always reply that an easier question would be what can't you do there! And we can help you with all of it. Of course, we share the rich history and the important landmarks that any tour to Morocco includes, but we also provide unique opportunities to mix and mingle with the locals that allow our guests to gain insight into day to day life. So if you are looking for an authentic experience (budget or luxury) that takes you off the beaten path, then we are the company for you. And if you want to throw in a little hiking, trekking, rock climbing, mountain biking, surfing, kite-surfing, mule trekking, horseback riding, or even skiing (yes, I said skiing), we can do that, too!"

How did you get involved in travel?

"My path towards a career in travel was a crooked one, but began with a vacation to Morocco in 2012 where I met the most amazing guide, Abderrahman (Abdou for short). He was so amazing, in fact, that after a few more visits we decided to get married. After he had settled into life in the United States, an opportunity presented itself for us to create Morocco Immersion Tours & Adventures. And so, after many years of discussion, we "pulled the trigger" and Morocco Immersion was born."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"Obviously, my trip to Morocco in 2012 was life changing - talk about transformative travel experiences! Besides meeting my soulmate on that trip, I was mesmerized by the desert and upon my return dreamt about it for 30 nights in a row. Abdou told me that that was the magic of the desert. In subsequent trips, I got to learn more about the culture and meet more of the locals, and that's when I discovered that despite the breathtaking beauty of the landscapes, the true beauty of Morocco is the rich culture and the warmth and generosity of its people. We traveled to Morocco with 19 people, with three different arrival dates. Sharon helped coordinate complex room assignments, a private family event in the desert to celebrate a birthday, and so much more. The trip philosophy of Abdou and Sharon is to focus on locals in Morocco and to show a picture of Morocco that focuses on its true essence, the culture and local food of the people. During the actual trip, Abdou made everything seamless and everything was arranged without hesitation. He had a positive spirit and encouraged us to live in the moment the entire time. Every accommodation and activity was wonderful and would do this trip again in a heartbeat! We highly highly recommend a night in the Sahara desert camps and spending time in Dades. If we could do this again, probably would spend more time in Chefchaouen and Dades, and one less night in Marrakech.

After many flight delays and hours of travel we were met with Abdou who made sure the rest of our trip was trouble - free. Abdou is full of great energy, very kind, patient, and wants to make sure you have the most fun possible. As we traveled across Morocco Abdou introduced us to the amazing culture and history that this country holds. Immediately you can tell he loves Morocco and that he's very passionate about sharing his culture with everyone. Some of the highlights were watching the sunset next to a Spanish mosque on top of a mountain, riding the camels through the desert, and being invited to his home where we met his wonderful wife, Sharon.
During the bus rides, Abdou kept us entertained. We played guessing games and the kids even wrote a paragraph based off the game :
"The country of Morocco is represented by it's flag which include the colors red and green. So far on this trip we visited the city Chefchaouen which is known for being the the blue city. Some of the meals we have eaten so are are Tagine which consists of potatoes, carrots and other vegetables and Couscous. We also visited Volubilis where we saw Roman ruins. Then we went to Fez where we saw many donkeys and stayed in the riad. Lastly we have tried Hammam which was an interesting experience for us all"
If you are looking for an adventure where you truly feel immersed in Moroccan culture without complications, then we highly recommend Morocco Immersion Tours and Adventures to plan your trip. We are very grateful for them and we will be sure to use them for our next trip!

My trip to Morocco was very good. I had no problems, and overall, I was happy with the plan. Here are some specific thoughts.

I felt the details of my trip were handled at the very last minute. This gave me some anxiety, especially since I had not used KimKim before and did not know if I could trust them.

My driver/guide/translator/friend, Ayoub, was excellent. Maybe most important but the least visible to me, he is a very safe and careful driver. It was nice not to even think about the driving. Ayoub also gave me excellent insight into Moroccan history and culture, and I enjoyed traveling with him. When I return to Morocco, I will request his service. (I might even want his plan for visiting the southern desert.)

My trip plan was good. I liked all the riads in which I stayed. Each was comfortable and sufficiently modern, yet each had the flavor of Morocco. Also, each was in a good location. The quality of my city guides was inconsistent.

I really liked visiting Chefchaouen and Fes. Marrakech was the best, and I wish I had more time there. Rabat was a waste of time. Everyone lives across the river so by late afternoon, the Rabat medina is empty. I think a couple of things were missing from my trip. I saw only the old towns (medinas) of large cities. I am curious how most modern Moroccan city dwellers live. I should have walked through a new town street and maybe had lunch there. Also, I did not stop in a small village or town in Morocco. I would have loved to visit a small town on market day. Now that I have read more about Morocco, I wish I had gone to see the desert. The desert is clearly an important part of Morocco. (I might have said "no desert" in the planning stage. If I did, then that was my mistake.)

I enjoyed the cooking class I did in Chefchaouen. It was not great for teaching cooking that I could do on my own, but it was a fantastic view of life in a real Moroccan home. It would have been better if I did not do this on Friday when the markets are closed.

I wanted to visit Merja Zerga National Park to see flamingos. Where we went for a boat into the park did not sound correct according to what I read. We hired what is basically a water taxi that people use to cross the river. I did see flamingos, but the boat driver was restricted from entering the park and getting close to the birds. Also, he did not know his birds. However, we did have the boat drop us at Moulay Bousselham (across the river from the car). We had lunch there, and there was not another tourist in sight. I felt like I was seeing the real Morocco off the tourist route.

A couple of additional resources would have been helpful. I wish someone at KimKim had suggested some reading to get me oriented to Morocco (other than my guidebook). After visiting Morocco, I read 'My 1001 Nights: Tales...'. It is not great literature, but it is a good introduction to a foreigner's visit to Morocco. I am sure there are other books that would be good. I also wish someone had suggested restaurants for dinner. I used my guidebook (Moon Morocco) and Trip Advisor. I felt every place in which I ate was for tourists. I am sure your local contacts could have suggested better. (I did manage to eat at Nur in Fes... one of the best restaurants in Morocco.)

I enjoyed my trip, and I want to thank everyone at KimKim and Morocco Immersion who helped.

What an amazing introduction to Morocco! We could not have been happier with our experience planning (and replanning due to Covid) this experience with Sharon. She was knowledgeable, patient and kind and became a friend during the process. When the trip finally happened, it was everything we had hoped for and then some. Yassine, our guide, was fantastic from the minute he met us at the airport. We got to see a bit of Casablanca before heading out to Rabat. From there it just kept getting better and better. The variety of trip, from the ethereal blue city of Chefchaouen, to the ancient Medina of Fez, to the GORGEOUS Sahara Desert, and the endless vibrant energy and colors of Marrakech….it’d be hard to pick a favorite part. Even the riads we stayed in were so far beyond our expectations….every single one. And even though Yassine was always full of interesting facts and insights, they also provided specialized local guides in some of the cities that guided us through back streets and ancient narrow passageways to tiny hidden local gems and old family shops we would never have found on our own. And we’re glad we did 2 weeks instead of only 1; there was SO much to see and do and it still felt like we were rushing. Two weeks allowed us to have a free day every now and then to just meander the streets on our own and get a better feel for the places. If you’re considering Morocco, Morocco Immersion is the perfect company to work with. Thank you, Sharon!!!!!

At first, when arranging our trip, I was concerned about spending too much time in the car, but I am glad I let Sharon convince me otherwise. Marocco is such a wonderful country, with many different things to see. So, even the time in the car was well spent. Salam, the tour manager, in addition to being an excellent driver, is also an awesome human being, genuinely concerned about ensuring everything went well.
The trip to Marocco is definitely worth the time, and we highly recommend Sharon and her team. Everything went according to plan. We had no issues at all.

The overall trip was a remarkable experience being my first time to Morocco. My guide Yassine and I covered a lot of ground in the 10 days I was there but that was what it was meant to be. My next trip to Morocco will most likely be to spend more time in each city/village, etc. to get more of the daily life experience.

As I mentioned, Yassine was my guide throughout the trip. By the second day, I felt like we were "brothers". We got along so well. His warm, welcoming nature and knowledge, I couldn't ask for more. I enjoyed and looked forward traveling with him everyday, he made the trip so easy. It was hard leaving him on the last day but hope to have a lasting friendship well into the future. I would certainly, without hesitation, recommend him as a guide. Here's to you Yassine!!!

So hard to pinpoint what was my favorite of places since they all had their own uniqueness. My top four would be the overnight in the desert (Merzouga), Chefchaouen (wished I had spend two nights instead of one), Fes and Marrakech. Feeding the barbary apes in the Atlas Mountains was a highlight as well.

In addition to Yassine, I also had day guides in some of the cities/villages I visited.

Taher, was my guide as he showed me the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Very pleasant, he informed me of the history of the once former grand city along with its demise.

My Fes guide, Said, was a true gentleman. Also a very knowledgeable, educated person who showed me the Royal Palace, Jewish Quarter and the medina. We had great conversation at lunch of which we shared New York stories as he once lived there for a time. I hope to reconnect if he was to visit NYC again or myself to Morocco.

In the oasis town of Tinghir, my guide Mustapha, showed me the palmeraie, which is a green oasis where the locals grow their own food and then we walked through the Mellah (old Jewish area). Although my time with Mustapha was limited, I was humbled by the experience.

Lastly, my day guide in Marrakech, Rachid, showed me the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the souks (bazaars) of the city. Also a pleasant, happy person to be with, Rachid seems to be what I would consider a "foodie type" as he brought me to untouristed places for tea/coffee and then to lunch in the Mellah at a restaurant which served lamb cooked from a Merchoui underground oven made of bricks and local earth. The lambs are drained, steamed and roasted for several hours. If you're a meat/lamb eater, you've never tasted anything like this - amazing!

I will treasure my trip to Morocco in the years to come having the privilege to have met such wonderful people. I hope to return sooner than later. My love to you all.

We were amazed at the good quality roads all over the country but especially in Rabat and Casablanca. We were blown away by the internet connectivity, even in the remotest villages and deep canyons.
Our accommodation was in all instances very good and above our expectations. Here I must mention that our best stay was at Chez Ichou in Boumalne Dades. The food was exceptional and the service, was by far, the best in all Morocco.

Our Top 3 memories from this trip were:
1. The hike at Akchour Park in Chefchaouen, where we drank mint tea next to the cascading waterfalls.
2. The desert camel trek in Merzouga.
3. The cooking class in Essaouira at Khadija’s Kuzina.

Authenticity & Character
Charming little boutique hotel in a beautiful part of Morocco.
Location
Beautifully located next to a stream where the sounds of running water were the first thing that you heard in the morning.
Staff
The staff were, by far, the best trained, that we encountered in our entire stay in Morocco and the food was exceptional.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Spacious bedroom and bathroom with a lovely balcony overlooking the river. Our laundry was washed and ironed and returned to us, timeously.

Disappointing....

Authenticity & Character
Better general management of the accommodation as well as the food.
Location
We were very disappointed with the quad bikes and vehicles that drove at speed close to the camp and close to the camels while trekking in and out of camp.
Staff
A bit chaotic! We were so relieved when our tour manager, Sallam, arrived to check if we were ok.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The pipe to the basin tap was leaking badly and there was water all over the floor

We also appreciate the feedback regarding the SUVs and quads that you encountered there - we know that this can be a problem during the busy times of year and we did pass on your feedback to the management team of the camp (even though the vehicles of note were not from that particular camp). With that exception, though, we are happy that Morocco exceeded your expectations in many ways and that your journey was relaxed and pleasant.

We are a group of 6 – (3 couples) – who wished to squeeze in a 5-day trip to Morocco – an opportunity that was not to be missed during our travels in Spain and Portugal. Sharon put together a great package in northern Morocco that truly was an immersion in the Moroccan culture. A short 1-hour ferry ride from Tarifa port in Spain took us to Tangier, and in each location – Tangier, Chefchaouen, and Fez – we stayed in the ancient part of the city and our overnight accommodations were in converted homes of wealthy families. Clean, basic, and functional rooms that fit our budget. We were amazed at the size, beauty, and facilities of these homes once you were inside – including rooftop and garden decks - from the street or laneway the access is an unassuming door or gate!
From pickup to drop-off at the port, we were transported in a newish and comfortable Renault 9-passenger van by a very pleasant driver – Abdol – who had good English language abilities and could not have been more helpful in ensuring our comfort and answering our many questions.
Hands down the best tour guide that we experienced was Said - educated in New York and spoke perfect English. Said took us on a tour of the ancient city of Fez – including the famous tanneries, the mosque, and the massive medina (market). So interesting with all the cultural texture and historical facts that Said provided along the way.
Throughout the process, we cannot say enough about Sharon. The tour was efficiently arranged and within our desired budget. She was so responsive when we contacted her with questions, and her answers were clear and informative. Even a last-minute change to a different riad than had been first booked was handled smoothly.
We are so pleased we experienced this amazing destination, and we would highly recommend Morocco Immersion Tours & Adventures to anyone planning a trip there.

Sharon planned our trip and was outstanding and responsive before during and even after returning home as I'll explain. We needed Sharon only once while traveling to accommodate our son during our eight days on the road with our driver Hicham as our son wished for his own room during our final three nights together. She managed that process with our driver, Hicham once she gained our permission to adjust the extra cost for which we were grateful. Hicham was an outstanding driver, conversational if we engaged him (were not asleep) while always keeping us safe. He would meet us to pick us up at our accommodations not on time, but always early. Our vehicle clean inside and out. He was professional, and courteous. There were times we'd invite him to have lunch with us and he would politely decline. Of course this was during the time for him to make calls to confirm tour guides were at the ready for us whether it be two hours away or more, wherever our next destination was. He was never on his phone while driving nor checking messages. Our guides would magically appear and Hicham would hand us off and appear exactly when we needed him again. We did enjoy a few meals together, but Hicham was the consummate professional at all times. Hicham became like family to us as we traveled with our son during the first eight days before dropping him at his University to study abroad. Our son sat in the front seat listening intently to Hicham as he explained his roots in Morocco, that he is a proud Berber, among the original settlers of Morocco. Hicham drove many many thousands of kilometers somehow without GPS through the Sahara Desert by the Algerian border, and we always felt safe. It's customary to be stopped as a tour van and he always had perfect legal documentation. A highlight for us was luxury camping after riding camels in Merzouga, with our own private showers, wireless and Air Conditioning. We learned not all tours direct their clients to the luxury camps like we enjoyed; in fact, we were the only three at our camp, and neighboring camps included dozens of people sharing toilets, no wireless, nor AC. Among those were a honeymoon couple we saw the next morning at sunrise after climbing the highest dune to catch sunrise which confirmed what we already knew about Sharon and Hicham's utmost high level of integrity. Hicham helped us deliver our son and move him to Ifrane at the University and waited patiently for us when there were University snafus. He never complained and only exhibited the highest level of patience. We have incredible memories and photos now that we've been home two weeks, and finally need to mention that my son lost his debit card while traveling last weekend to Tangier about a six hour journey from his University in Ifrane. Morocco is a cash economy so it was frightening to our son to have just begun a long holiday weekend away with limited cash. I messaged Sharon to suggest solutions such as a wire, and she offered to have Hicham drive to our son to give him some Dirhams. Now that is going above and beyond! We love Moroccan Immersions!! Thank you, Sharon and Hicham. We will be referring all of our friends to you.

At each Riad (Riad Nesma in Marrakech, Chez Ichou, and Kasbah Itrane Tamnougalt) and the desert camp we were provided with delicious food and attentive service. If you decide to do a desert overnight at the wonderful Palais des Dunes Luxury Camp don’t miss out on leaving camp in the evening to do some star gazing - it can’t be beat! Additionally, on your way out of Ourzazate, visit Taman’Art Space, a unique artist’s collective founded by the incredibly talented local artist, Aissa Joud.

What made the trip special was how wonderful our driver, Mahmoud, was - you truly couldn’t ask for a better person to show you around such a beautiful country. From Marrakech to the Sahara and back, Mahmoud went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, introducing us to fantastic music (we are now gnawa fans for life), and teaching us so much about Moroccan and Amazigh culture. Mahmoud did an amazing job getting us from place to place safely, connecting us with local excursions and making sure my dietary restrictions were understood (i.e., celiac) when we stopped for meals. If you are lucky enough to visit Morocco, you will be twice as lucky if you have Mahmoud as your driver. Not only did we have a fantastic trip, we gained a wonderful friend as well!

It was a once in a lifetime trip that we will never forget and we can’t wait to come back!

Guided Tour of Fes
Fes

Hassan was a wonderful guide in terms of his cultural, historical and religious knowledge. He created a great backdrop for our tour through the medina.

Quality of Experience
We would have liked to have been asked about visiting all the souks before we went. Instead, we were told that we were going to this one and that one to meet someone the guide knew but were of course "under no obligation to buy anything but this work supports our people." Some of the locations were for products we had no interest in. And the shopkeeper's disappointment was very evident in any place where we did not purchase anything. The tannery, in particular, was disappointing, as the man giving us the tour spoke no English and could not explain the tanning process, for which we had many questions. After a quick climb to the roof for a picture, he took us immediately to a showroom and wanted us to try on some jackets.
Guides, Drivers and Staff
We wish Hassan had asked us at the start what souks we were interested in visiting and given us the option of choosing where to go. Also, we were shown to a very touristy restaurant for lunch, with a fixed menu, and not asked about what type of meal we would like.

Our camel guide insisted on us climbing a dune to see the sunset despite the approaching storm. We quit before we reached the summit due to blowing, stinging sand and limited visability. I think he was intent on completing the task he was assigned to do, but we would have been happier skipping this part and proceeding on to the camp ahead of the storm. Sallam went out of his way to take us to find a bottle of wine that we could enjoy with our dinner.

My daughter and I typically do a "girls trip" to a different country every year. This year, we decided to visit a Morroco. I travel quite a bit - both professionally and personally. Typically, I research and book all of our travel arrangements - from booking flights, researching cities to visit, things to do, hotels to stay and local transportation options. (I actually enjoy doing it! Seriously.)

However, with this trip, I felt a little out of my "comfort zone" in planning it by myself, so I decided to try out KimKim. Without a doubt, working through KimKim and getting connected with local travel specialist, Sharon, from Morocco Immersion Tours & Adventures, was one of the best travel decisions I've made over the years. Here's why:

From the first "virtual" introductions to the final days before our trip, Sharon was always accessible, professional and knowledgeable. In this particular case, it also helped that she was an American living in Morocco so there was no language barrier. When we arrived, our tour manager, Hicham, was there waiting for us, and the adventure began! I’m so glad we had Hicham throughout out entire trip to drive us place to place, connect us with other tour guides for specific tours, help check us in to our Riads (hotels), and tell us more about the country during our longer drives from the perspective of someone who was born and raised there. (BTW, his English was great!) He went above and beyond any expectations I had – to include stopping by a pharmacy and speaking with the pharmacist to help me get some medicine for an allergic reaction I was having to poison ivy that I contracted BEFORE the trip in my backyard and didn’t know it!

I cannot say enough about Hicham’s the level of professionalism throughout the entire trip and genuine desire for us to have the best vacation possible in his country. Same is true for the other tour guides they connected us with for specific tours. The attention to detail in everything – from our accommodations to our restaurants to the third-party partnerships they have acquired is unequaled! I am so glad we were connected with Morocco Immersion Tours & Adventures. I wish they were in more countries! I will definitely use them again when we come back to visit!

All parts of the itinerary were followed and the tour gave us a good overview of Morocco which is an amazing country with wonderful people. Sallam was always eager and informative to share his culture and teach us the history of his country and people. Sharon accommodated our request to have A/C in all accommodations, including the desert camp in Merzouga, which was amazing. We were impressed by the riads and hotels we stayed in as well. The local guides were all friendly and gave us a good overview of the cities we were in; we especially appreciated the tour with Muhammed in Marakesh. My suggestions to improve on this tour would be to provide more options for the lunch places our local guides lead us to... the restaurants were all very tourist oriented and the meals were very similar to one another. In the areas that have more options, allowing us to choose among recommended places to eat would have been great. We also felt that the cooperatives many of the local guides took us to ate up much of our tour time and the wares were overpriced. It was also difficult to tell if some of these cooperatives were actually sanctioned by the government. Other than those suggestions, we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Morocco.

From the first communications, we could tell that Sharon would be a great travel partner for us: she is responsive, courteous, and full of helpful ideas. Those traits carried through out our planning and travel process; we never felt like we were on our own. The driver who was assigned to us helped us for our entire nine day trip; he was personable, very thoughtful, and kept our safety top of mind. When we settled in each destination, we found the accommodations selected by Sharon and her team to be quite lovely and very culturally authentic. The guides arranged at each site were all friendly, knowledgeable, and adept at speaking multiple languages. Our first trip to Morocco was most certainly made possible because of Morocco Immersion and it left us confident that we will return to this colorful and vibrant country.

This was our least favorite location of our trip — so many we are holding it to the standards set by the other locations. We understand that we are in the middle of the desert, so accommodations are limited, but this site was just not for us. It was very hot — and there is no ventilation in the tents — windows to open or ways to get air flow. The site says you can sleep under the stars — but they offered no way to do that. When we arrived, there was a group of 14-16 young adults who had, shall we say, a different energy level than us and stayed up all night — aided by a site provided drum circle. The food was ok and there was no accommodation possible for food allergies.

Tips for future travelers

Make sure you bring beverages with you as the options are limited, not cold, and very expensive. Also, depending on the length of your stay, figure out how not to bring all your luggage as there are a lot of bugs and sand gets in everything.

This hotel is very lovely — a bit of a drive to get to, but worth the trip. Though on the major road, it is very quiet and feels hidden with the back of the property set in to the countryside. The food was delicious and the staff was so incredibly kind. There is a beautiful pool on the roof as well — though we didn’t have time to enjoy that, we did use the roof for star gazing. We would most certainly recommend this property.

We loved this property most of all. The setting was spectacular— there are private flower and vegetable gardens to your, a family donkey who has quite the personality, and a quiet/calm setting that felt so welcoming. The pool and patio are lovely and perfect for unwinding and outdoor dining. The staff was too kind and accommodating— one of the only spots that truly understood a gluten food allergy. The guest rooms were spacious, the common areas allows for guest interactions. Our room even had a walk out patio as we were on the first floor. You can also easily walk to town (~1 mile) where there is a market and local vendors to enjoy. Unfortunately we only had one night here, but we would definitely visit again.

Our opinion is a bit swayed as we visited during the major music festival in June 2022), but this property upon arrival left a lot to be desired. The team seemed disorganized and could not figure out our room — we wait for nearly an hour only to discover there was no room available. They were able to accommodate us with a room to use temporarily and then while we were out they moved our belongings. Spending only one night, we also needed to leave early the next day, before breakfast would be prepared, and they were not able to accommodate an early start (by 30 minutes). Eventually they agreed to prepare a bagged option — no consideration for food allergies — but this seemed like a big lift. We have traveled to plenty of international properties were some help is offered proactively to travelers leaving early, but such service seemed beyond this hotel. We mention this because this property was definitely the largest property we visited and they seemed the least guest focused.

Tips for future travelers

Essaouria is an energetic city — be prepared for noise throughout the evening.

A beautiful property that surprises you the moment you step through the plain and nearly camouflaged front door. The team was incredibly inviting and helpful. There is a beautiful pool in the center of the property with a restaurant and tables around the perimeter. Dinner is offered — it is a bit pricey but very delicious and worth the price. There is an exercise room — you have to ask for access at the front desk. The guest room was spacious and the bathroom was huge. We were very pleased with this property.

Tips for future travelers

Dinner is expensive and a fixed menu; if that is not your preference, suggest finding an option outside of the property.

Planning our trip with Sharon was effortless. She was extremely responsive and took care of our every question and concern. Our driver and guide, Hussein became like family. His excellent driving and language skills aside, he is one of the most compassionate, kind and caring human beings that I have ever met. He made our trip very special. I highly recommend Kimkim and especially Hussein. Moroccan’s are some of the nicest, accommodating people we have met while traveling. The country’s landscape is gorgeous with gorges, valleys and stellar panoramic views. Staying in Riad’s in the Medina’s is extra special. The food is excellent, albeit a bit repetitive. Other cuisines are available in larger cities and Hussein took us somewhere different when we had enough tangines. We did a 6 day immersion from Marrakech (city guide one day and hike/gardens the second - Dades Valley - camel ride and camp in the dessert and up to Fez for 2 days. Be prepared for a couple of LONG driving days. There is much to see and it’s hard to nap because you don’t want to miss anything. I would recommend getting an antibiotic from your doctor prior to your trip as we experienced traveler’s diarrhea although we didn’t drink tap water, we did consume all fruits and vegetables. They were too good to resist. Morocco is a country that bargains when purchasing items. Be prepared. We had separate guides for Marrakech, Dades Valley and Fez. We wished we could have had our Hussein for these excursions as well. Their English was very good and knowledge extensive but they clearly received a commission from specific shops. Some tours included an instructional demonstration of a specific craft which we very much enjoyed but typically lead to a gift shop and sales pitch afterwards. We have found this to be true in other countries and on other tours. This is how they make their money and it’s good to be prepared. It’s important to have a mind set of traveling to experience another culture and be prepared to not to have every creature comfort of home (lack of toiletries, subpar linens/towels, temperamental toilets or lack of toilet paper, no half & half for coffee). My favorite experience was having tea with a Berber family and seeing how they live, their daily routine and the “appliances” they use. The Medina in Fez was also a high point. Taking in the countryside and views during the drive and having conversation with Hussein about himself, the culture and norms from his perspective was also a highlight. Morocco is not to be missed, especially with Hussein and knowing that Sharon is an email away. Go and have a great time!

I've been eager to write this post - and I usually don't review anything at length (if at all!) BUT, this experience requires it - and I hope it helps you decide.
If you do this trip with Morocco Immersion thru KimKim, WITH SHARON - you will have NO disappointments!
PEOPLE: 1. from the first contact I had with Sharon, I was hooked.
I messaged Sharon with some quick, random questions and she was quick to reply. She replied to everything I asked - promptly, generously and courteously. She was patient and answered the smallest concerns I had. She focussed on designing the trip I wanted and was hoping for. (The trip with Morocco Immersion is not a "pre-planned, 8 other people we didn't know with varying agendas" joining us.
It was designed for us.) And it was reasonably priced which made me skeptical at first!
SHARON totally knows what she's doing!
2. Our driver: SALLAM - He was THE BEST. Really. He's young - yet knew his country, its history, the places we were going, and was proud of his own culture while being super respectful of ours. Sallam was welcoming and always attentive to our questions and needs. He was an excellent driver over some 2500km in 10 days - and was always stopping at all the best look-outs before I even asked! He met with us regularly to make sure we had everything we needed and knew what was coming up next. He was friendly, humourous, and engaged. Great guide! Highly recommended!
3. Our tour guides: in Marrakech, The Sahara and Taroudant knew their landscape, the history and the best places to get authentic food, pottery, jewelry, leather-wear, carptes, argon oil, saffron - you name it. They worked hard at being welcoming and informative. STELLAR guides.
FOOD: My husband and I are foodies. The experience of drinking daily mint tea (poured properly with bubbles ;-)), eating tagines and even street food from vendors, was awesome. We tried lots of different things, including fresh fish in Essaouiria - bought by us and then grilled in the fish market right before our eyes. We often had fresh squeezed, "any kind of fruit juice" right in the markets we visited.
Our ACCOMODATIONS were a mix of luxury to 'comfortable with other types of conveniences'. Our rooms were always clean, with private washrooms and tiled floors and walls. The riads were both historically interesting and visually appealing. We drank it all in! The luxury accomodations we had, sometimes with dinner included, were worth writing home about. The bedding was always crisp and clean. Lovely. (We did the luxury Sahara camp on our trip - it was one of the highlights of our trip for reasons that would be apparent if you go.)
OVER-ALL - I know this is a long review, but I totally recommend Sharon, Sallam and 'Morroco Immersion' even to people who have had no previous interest in going to Morocco!
It was a trip of a lifetime - and worth every penny we spent.

Hotel Reviews
Riad al Rimal
Marrakech

The room, though a little small, was visually appealing. The furniture was exotic ... the layout was interesting, the food delicious and the maze of hallways and corners to sit, read, nap and drink tea on the roof-top, were very luxurious. It was a quiet, safe, lovely riad. (They have a small pool which we cooled off in every day. I saw someone complain about the water being cold. ??? It was. And it was perfect after a long, hot day on the walking tour and in the souks.)

Tips for future travelers

Enjoy the perks of this exotic riad. Take time to cozy up in a corner to drink tea or linger over a converstaion. It has great places to 'be'.

Authenticity & Character
Lots of corners to sit, hide, read, nap and drink tea. Beautiful exotic deco.
Location
Hidden in a maze of alleys and yet incredibly beautiful and safe.
Staff
Sometimes we knocked at the wrong door or found ourselves on the wrong floor. Staff was always smiling and ready to help.
Cleanliness & Comfort
LOVED the clean, crisp sheets.
Chez Ichou
Dades Gorge

We arrived at what looked like a riad out on the main road along our journey. The inside was stellar! The decor was clean, with green plants everywhere and lovely, private decks out back overlooking the ravine. The dining room was intimate and welcoming. The rooms were large and the bedding crisp and clean. It was a beautiful two night stop. (Food was amazing!0

Tips for future travelers

Make sure to have a meal at this locale. Linger on the terrace before dinner with a mint tea (or glass of wine.) Don't rush. It is a wonderful, restful riad.

Authenticity & Character
Location
It's kinda in the middle of nowhere - but close to a bunch of attractions if you have a driver or are on a tour.
Staff
The waiters were super friendly, smiling and eager to please. Just a joy to meet and be taken care of by.
Cleanliness & Comfort
Palais des Dunes Luxury Camp
Merzouga

From the moment you arrive you are served hot mint tea and are treated to pampering and care by the staff. The camp is visually appealing - with colour, lighting and outdoor seating areas. The inside is comfortable and clean. It's in the desert - yet had a private toilet and shower! (What?) It was a little warm inside, but did NOT feel like camping! It was luxury in the desert.

Tips for future travelers

Stay up late to watch the sun go down and stars come out. Get up before sunrise and climb a dune to watch sun up. It's spectacular. Wear sandals - not shoes. The sand is cool in the morning. Have a shower when you get there and dress up a little for dinner. It feels like you're in a great, romantic movie. <3

Authenticity & Character
You travel over an hour by camel to get the camp. While there are other camps nearby, the way the camps are set up allows you to feel private once you arrive. The attention to detail: the lighting, evening fire and music, the dinner (3 courses+), and the welcoming tea and cookies was really inviting.
Location
The list of what I liked is too long. It was pretty perfect.
Staff
Cleanliness & Comfort
Because it was in the desert - the accomodation deserve a 5 star - but it isn't quite the same as being in a riad with tiled floors and walls. It was more than great - but also not a 'building'. It's a fabulous tent!
Kasbah Itrane Tamnougalt
Tamnougalt

This stop was probably my favourite. (Other than the Sahara camp ... Also my favourite!) The kasbah was old, clean and inviting (with oranges right on the trees in the courtyard). We had a traditional band playing the night we were there. The building is historic and exotic. The outdoor dining area over-looks a palm grove. The indoor dining area is beautifully romantic, and the pool overlooks the mountains. What's not to like? The rooms were very large, with working wifi and airconditioning. The beds were comfortable and the linens were clean and crisp. Perfect stop.

Tips for future travelers

Be sure to tour the near-by kasbah if you have time. It has a rich history and is still inhabited by locals. Also - take time and don't rush. Enjoy the views from outdoor dining area and share a drink or meal in the late afternoon when things are slowing down.

Authenticity & Character
Location
There are mountains to the north and a palm grove to the south. The building itself requires time to stare at and explore.
Staff
Cleanliness & Comfort
This kasbah was historically and visually rich. It was a lovely stop on a sunny afternoon with a warm breeze. Would gladly go again!
Riad Taroudant
Taroudant

So - the upstairs terrace was really lovely. The rooms were dated and a little uncomfortable - but clean! We had a fellow guest's dog - unleashed - nip the back of my husband's leg while we were there so I think that kinda threw us off of our experience of this riad. (It was 'fine' - clean and safe... but not overly appealing otherwise.)

Authenticity & Character
Location
Staff
Cleanliness & Comfort
This riad was inside the old city, easy to access and in a safe neighbourhoood. It was more than enough for a one night stay. Breakfast was great. The view from the roof of the Atlas Mountains was lovely.
Riad Maison Du Sud
Essaouira

This riad is right in the hub of the old, inner city, nestled in the maze of souks and cafes. It has two or three sitting/dining areas that are exotic and well deocorated with artwork - modern and historic. The plants and lighting create a romantic, intimate mood to have a drink, a tea or cozy up for a good conversation.

Authenticity & Character
Beautifully decorated - a combination of modern art and historic deco.
Location
Perfect inner city location without much noise.
Staff
Polite and helpful - not as super friendly as other places we stayed.
Cleanliness & Comfort
The breaker in our room blew a couple of times but someone promptly attended to it. The wenting in the bathroom was poor.

When you book with Morocco Immersion Tours, you not only get the expertise of a highly professional tour company, but the warmth and genuine affection of what seems like old friends. From the moment we started contact with Sharon, she listened and tweaked the itinerary to make it exactly what me and my family (two teens) were looking for. Once the itinerary was finalized, we couldn’t wait to start our adventure!
And then we met Sallam, who was our driver and companion between destinations, and he ended up becoming like part of our family. From the moment he met us at the airport, his warm smile assured us that we were in good hands. He shared with us his background and Berber culture, and as we drove along the most scenic landscapes, he played for us the most beautiful Berber music. I loved the music so much that I actually downloaded it to my phone and listen to it at home.
We visited the beautiful blue city of Chefchaoen, walked through the bustling medinas of Fes and Marrakech, but I think the highlight of our trip was the Sahara Desert!! My family will never forget riding camels over the dunes at sunset, sleeping in a luxury desert camp, sand boarding at sunrise, and driving ATV vehicles over the orange sand dunes once more. Memories that will last a lifetime!
I truly want to thank everyone at Morocco Immersion Tours - Sharon, Sallam, Amnay, and everyone else who helped us make this the trip of a lifetime. I honestly feel that traveling helps make friendships across continents, and I will always love you guys. This is by far the best tour company that we have ever used, and I highly recommend them to all future travelers to Morocco!

Sharon at Morocco Immersion did an excellent job planning our trip and Hicham did a wonderful job executing that plan. The plan that was created was flexible enough to change as needed. All of our accommodations were clean and provided the service rating that we selected (some better, some right at star rating). Breakfast and meals that were included in the plan were put together well. We had two minor events during the trip, but the team immediately made things right. We thoroughly adored exploring the country of Morocco!!

But as soon as a deal is done, tea , laughs and hugs are in order.
As an experienced long time traveler, our guide Hicham was fabulous and truthfully he became our friend. I have invited him and Sharon to visit if they ever make it to CA. Not only was he attentive to all our needs he actually had us over in his apartment for Moroccan Pizza one night.

The 2 cooking classes at Abdouls home and Khadija's was so yummy. The food so delicious, fresh and creative. Love those Tangines. We loved the tourists places to eat along with the locals as well. I have to say during this tumultuous time in our lives dealing with Covid 19, this trip was a piece of cake. Never did we feel uncomfortable throughout Morocco and flying on a different airlines was a piece of cake.

My favorite of course was riding the camels in the Sarah Desert to our camp. The sand and its color and shades made my heart sing. The food so good, the drums and our lodging reminded me so much of safaris in southern Africa. My roomy and me got up to see the sun rise. Our tents were so beautiful and luxurious. I decided not to ride the camel back but 4 wheeled back to the start. Yippee over the dunes. But the sand and the shadows was captivating. I had to ask Mustafa to stop to I could take it all in. I could have stayed another few days.

I could go on and on, but if you are thinking of Morocco, please contact this great company and request Sharon.
