Terry Stanley

I am Icelandic-Canadian, working remotely from the west coast of Canada (only a non-stop flight away). I have emphatically embraced my Icelandic heritage, continually learning, and experiencing, more of Iceland.

As an ambassador of travel to Iceland, I make it my responsibility to showcase the fun and the fabulous, the odd and the awe-inspiring, the memorable and the magical of this amazing country.

My affinity is to include as many experiences as (reasonably) possible when I travel so that I get a well-rounded view of the destination I'm visiting. I can not sit still when I travel ( which is probably why I don't do beach holidays)! Good thing that I specialize in Iceland then.

What places and activities do you specialize in?

"All of Iceland, with a particular affinity towards the North and East. I create self-drive trips that showcase the best and the unique of Iceland. If you're of Icelandic heritage, I can also add in a genealogical component to your self-drive."

How did you get involved in travel?

"I fell in love in high school - with the geography projects I was assigned in Social Studies class. I wanted to not only learn about more countries but experience them first-hand myself.

So upon graduation, I enrolled in a 2 year post-secondary travel and tourism program after which I supplemented this with certification as a travel counsellor.

After short stints with both an airline and a cruise line, I spent the majority of my 15 years at a national vacation tour company and a national travel agency (all of this in Canada).

I am now putting my Icelandic expertise to good use, working for Iceland Offbeat."

Please share a unique travel experience you will never forget.

"One of the many unique experiences that I've had while travelling throughout the world is when I went snowmobiling on Myrdalsjokull glacier in the south of Iceland.

It was a gorgeous day as we wound our way up Katla volcano in the glacier truck to the ice cap on top. Once there we got on our snowmobiles (I was driving solo) and set off for some photo stops - views of neighbouring Eyjafjallajokull glacier (of 2010 eruption fame), the south coast and the North Atlantic Ocean. As luck would have it, we were only able to see the glacier as visibility was decreasing.

While we were driving around on the glacier, a storm blew in. Soon the wind-whipped snow had made it a white-out! To make a long story short, we used GPS to safely traverse the ice cap and return back to our starting point. It was an experience like none other and one I'll never forget.

That being said, I still want a "do over" so that I can experience the views and the tour of the glacier the way it was meant to be.

"

Having never travelled to Iceland, I contacted KimKim to help us with our travel. I could not have been more pleased. They assigned us our very own specialist (Terry) and she was communicative, eager to help, professional, and super, super nice. I gave Terry some broad-stroke ideas about the types of things we wanted to do as well as the parameters (like days there, activity levels, and other logistical ideas), and Terry took those ideas and provided me with a fantastic draft plan.

Terry was very willing to work with me on refining the plan, and the end result was absolutely phenomenal.

We traveled for five days, four nights, staying two nights apiece at Hotel Ranga and Hotel Apotek. We saw a lava tunnel, stunning waterfalls, craters, geothermal areas, gorgeous landscapes, the city Reykjavik, and a couple spas. All of it was perfect. The two highlights were the ice cave near Vik and Sky Lagoon in Reykjavik.

More so, the planning done by Terry and KimKim was SO smart. The driving directions Terry provided us with ensured our travels were not only full of adventure but also smartly designed. This was actually the key to KimKim's success on our trip - they planned everything to my design and desire and set my wife and I up for success with a smartly designed plan.

I will admit was a little hesitant to do a self-guided tour (KimKim has other options too), but KimKim made it so easy and so wonderful that those fears and anxieties of being in a new country were immediately resolved.

Anytime I travel, I'm going to use KimKim. One of the top trips in my entire life. And, my wife was thrilled (:

PHENOMENAL hotel!! Super friendly, professional, and terrific facility. Restaurant was out of this world, but you do need a reservation (can be made early in day). My wife and I found out the hard way and there were no seats available until later in the evening, but the staff immediately rallied and served us dinner upstairs. I could not believe the service. Best hotel staff I've ever experienced. In addition to the staff, the hotel has a service where you can be alerted to Northern Lights when they appear, increasing your odds of seeing them! I would recommend Hotel Ranga to anyone. Phenomenal.

Hotel Apotek has the perfect location in Reykjavik - right in the center of downtown, walking distance to everything. Very friendly staff and GREAT rooms. Be aware, because Hotel Apotek is downtown, the parking can be very tough (no parking garage or lot). That said, the staff was willing to help me with figuring out Iceland's parking app and even brought my bags up to my room while I searched for parking. Hotel Apotek has a restaurant, and the breakfast buffet is the best I've ever had. Great choices to fill us up before exploring the city. Iceland did not disappoint and Kimkim as well. The entire process of selecting dates, tours and accommodations was pleasant and seamless. My specialist Terry was very responsive to my questions and provided information that I specifically was interested in, in a professional and friendly manner, so I felt confident embarking on the trip. My 7 day vacation saw me reaching most of the sights and experiences that i shortlisted, and then some, in an unhurried, safe and comfortable manner. The tour guides on the ground were knowledgeable and able to add much local colour and info about Iceland over and above the bare facts. Felag was the most notable of the guides but all were good and spoke excellent English. If anything could be improved the choice of hotel in the city centre could be revisited - the Holt is centrally located when its possible to walk around to sights and activities, the breakfast was AWESOME and the front desk staff, the breakfast staff and bartender were EXCELLENT, but the rooms are somewhat shabby with barely single beds with thin mattresses, and thin walls (so we could hear a heated, scary, quarrel next door during one night). Also drop offs to the Holt involved a 5 -10 minute walk which felt safe but we often got lost in the cold while seeking out a meal along the way. Communications with the tour agency while in Iceland could also be improved if an Iceland sim is included in the package with a small amount of data or some communication through the hotels - even though wifi is available on the buses and in the hotels, we didnt receive news of a cancellation until it was too late and wasted taxi fare and nearly half day of our first day (and i could have gone to the Settlement Museum in that time - sniff).
Overall I would definitely recommend Kimkim as a travel agency with the expertise to craft a totally enjoyable vacation adventure, to suit a wide range of interests.

Sky Lagoon

This was not my 1st experience of natural thermal baths, but the 1st in Iceland, and it was awesome. My sister and I became friendly with a few other visitors on the bus to Sky Lagoon and that added to the social aspect. We were fortunate to see the northern lights come up while we were luxuriating in the warm infinity pool, overlooking the sea - believe me, nothing tops that experience! A really Thrilling experience, even if one does not handle the sea well. The tour company Elding, was very thorough about the safety considerations and on checking in they offered motion sickness pill to any who felt they would need it. The crew gave information on the population of mammals that they observe and study, and we were fortunate to see two groups of white billed dolphins, 3 humpback and a minke whale during the hour trip. The weather was fine so no rain coats were needed and there were life jackets on board for any emergency. It was exciting and the ride was smooth. My only reservation is that the initial booking was cancelled due to bad weather(understandably) but this was communicated to me after I arrived, which derailed my day plan and cost me extra taxi fare.

A very enjoyable and informative tour all round. The vistas in the rift area and the geothermal area were spectacular. The waterfalls, hot spring baths and horse ranch visits were also lovely. The guide Siggi Anton was really helpful and knowledgeable (5 Star). The only inconveniences were that drop off and pick up were some distance from the hotel in Reykjavik, which in cold weather was a bother, and that participants who smoked during stops, trailed the cigarette smoke scent into the small bus, making it uncomfortable for others.

Two Day/One Night South Coast tour
Iceland

The two day trip was wonderful and many unique sites were visited - Jukulsarlon and the Vatnajokul glacier being just 2 of them. Overall I would say that this tour was my favourite of three that i participated in. The guide was phenomenally knowledgeable and gave us just a tidbit about each site and about Icelandic history and life in general - he left us wanting more info on the folklore and growth of the nation. The overnight hotel was spartan but adequate and the meals were typically expensive, tasty and filling. I had not anticipated a 2km trek over uneven ground to and from the ice cave and it was not mentioned in the tour description - it should be - I would still have gone but people need to know. It seems that Iceland expects all its visitors to be at least a contender for the olympic games, if not the world games, to fully participate in the tour activities. Overall, a great experience. Being picked up and dropped off at a remote site in the cold was difficult, because, although the distance was not great, getting around in the dark, finding an open dinner spot that didn't require a reservation somewhere nearby and not getting lost in the maze of streets in the town centre was challenging.

Two day/One night Snaefellsnes & West Iceland tour
Iceland

We got off on the wrong foot because the bus didnt arrive until 9:20 and I was already flustered as to whether I'd missed it in the half hour that i was waiting. Since i did not have an international sim, i contacted the tour operator using a borrowed phone- ugh. Anyway, Tomas (Thomas?) the guide was lovely and conducted the tour well. We visited some interesting sites - waterfalls, larva cave, seal coast, the glacier used as the Wall in Game of Thrones, and some less than amazing ones, among them a random lighthouse and a church. I felt that better information on why these were important or of interest could have allowed us to appreciate them more but as it was, some stops just seemed random and just a drive around with no purpose. We also spent an inordinate amount of time at Oddi - once the home of Snorri Sturluson, whose significance was not known to us and really the adulation of him was lost on us visitors without a prior backstory. It seemed like a waste of time, especially after finally being admitted to the church gift shop and finding that the exhibit on him was closed. Bummer. Tomas was engaging and as a point to improve, he could say why things or places or people are important to the Icelandic story. The accommodations in Borgarnes was fine- food was delicious. The prediction for northern lights was way low and we didnt see any. That should not be in the tour title.

Terry spent almost 9 months helping us plan a 7-day and a 6-day trip, before and after 18 days in Norway and Svalbard. We were involved as much as we wanted, providing feedback on the numerous options available. We made our way through the various COVID restrictions put in place by Iceland last year and earlier this year and all of them were thankfully lifted a month or two before departure.

We’ve travelled a lot, having spent almost 30 years living overseas, but this trip has us totally convinced that Iceland is the most beautiful country in the world. Around every bend in the road and from the top of hills and peaks, there were spectacular views. Terry planned a diverse set of stops and activities for us, from incredible waterfalls, to a glacier hike, snorkeling the Silfra Fissure, hiking in Porsmork, a boat trip and tour to a bird sanctuary on Vigur Island, and a five-hour spa retreat at Blue Lagoon.

The rental car process was easy and with the daily link to Google map directions Terry sent that easily connected to the car’s nav system, we never missed a turn and the the timing between places was amazingly accurate. The hotels were comfortable and varied, but always to a good standard.

I have always planned our elaborate trips myself, but took a chance on KimKim, because I didn’t know Iceland at all. I hate to admit it but Terry surpassed my extremely high bar and we had a an incredible trip. All that’s left is going through the thousand photographs!

We decided to book our trip through a travel agency, which we've never done before, because our Iceland adventure was part of a larger travel plan that we were already overwhelmed with booking. All through our time in Iceland, and since we got back, we've been congratulating each other on what a good idea that was!

We heard from Terry, our travel agent, within a few hours of filling out our interest form. And she was amazing. She was responsive to our questions and our priorities, she worked with us as we chose and changed activities (often) and she was communicative about roadblocks.

And, to top it all off, she put in a ton of extra work--all in secret--to help me plan a surprise proposal in front of an Icelandic waterfall for my now fiancee! She was so helpful and excited about being my "secret agent," and she planned everything so perfectly. It all went without a hitch, and my fiancee hadn't expected any of it!

Thank you, Terry, for a trip of a lifetime!

Lake Myvatn

This was a fun experience, although I suspect that there are even nicer nature baths in Iceland -- possibly ones that don't have as strong a smell of sulphur. This horseback ride was great -- better than I expected. I learned a lot about Icelandic horses and was thrilled with the opportunity to tolt -- to experience a horse gait that only Icelandic horses do. I'm not an experienced rider and I find trotting uncomfortable, so it was great fun to go faster than a walk (and learn something new). We also got to curry and feed our own horses, which was a nice experience. While the scenery on the ride wasn't spectacular, it was pretty and we particularly enjoyed getting to watch the farm's dog bound around the landscape and chase ducks into the river.

This is unquestionably a must-do experience. Kayaking is fun in lots of different locales, but kayaking around icebergs was particularly special. The Diamond Beach across the road from the glacial lagoon is also spectacular.

This was a fun experience, although, it was definitely more of a walk than a hike. A couple of not very fit participants really held us back & made the walk much slower than it needed to be. If you're an experienced hiker, like my companion and I are, I would recommend that you look at other activities the same tour agency provides, like the longer 4-hour hike. The guides are impressively knowledgeable, though, about the geology of the area and the impact of global warming on the glaciers.

Terry's notes on our itinerary, such as suggested places to make dinner reservations, were so helpful. We are both vegetarian, and a few weeks before the trip, Terry sent us a list of vegan/vegetarian restaurants in each location, which was very considerate.

All the details, the communication, and the accommodations were excellent. We are so happy with the trip.

It was a very smooth trip, and because of Terry, we focused on just having fun. No stress. We will definitely use kimkim again!

There is one problem. Terry seems to arrange everything and somewhere along the line the people in Iceland get involved. The hotel choices on that end were great in some cases and not as great in others. Whoever arranged for our car did so with an agency that was closed when we arrived. There was a kiosk that you could use but somehow it did not work for us. Consequently, we spend a couple of cold hours after a long flight dealing with the problem. Eventually, we took an expensive taxi ride to the first hotel and came back -- another expensive taxi ride -- in the morning to get the car, We were told to keep the receipts and we would be reimbursed but we are waiting for instructions on how to make this happen.

The Iceland Yurt !! Wow what an experience. Loved it. It was the perfect way to begin our adventure. We wanted a variety and she delivered. We stayed in a cottage on the water in Fjarabyggd and it happened to be cold, windy, rainy and blustery. It was so perfect and we were able to keep our blinds open and watch the weather through the windows overlooking this amazing water - the view was amazing. Frost and Fire in Hveragerdi was awesome. Loved the town and so glad she chose this little gem for us to stay for two nights. Every hotel choice was perfect - we had fantastic variety and locations.
Excursions !! She hit the nail on the head. Every one of them was perfection. We had the perfect quite the variety; beer bath, Glacier Hike, Geo Spa geothermal pool, Ice Cave tour, Glacier Snowmobile.
Between our excursions we had outlines of the best things to see as we drove around the country.
The driving directions and itinerary was outstanding. Every night we checked the next days activities and picked the can't miss ones !!! We followed right along with the directions in our trip plan. We loved the way the trip plan was broken down with the driving directions, hints (ie: when to book our covid test, dont forget to pay for the toll for the tunnel, etc) accommodations and confirmations for our tours.
It was truly priceless. It allowed us to just enjoy the adventure and not stress about the little things. Thankful for Terry's work and diligence to help us plan the absolute best vacation of our lives.

The day we went the winds were at least 50mph and it was hailing. Being a Florida girl never on a snowmobile I was second guessing my choice as I watched grown people fall over because the wind was so strong they couldn't even walk. Once we got on the snow mobile and drove for about 5 mintues we got out of the hail storm. It was the most beautiful sights from up there. Truly unforgettable .

When one of our tours was cancelled due to weather we were able to call and have them handle rescheduling for us. All in all made for a much more relaxing vacation, and I would definitely do it again and recommend the service to others. Thanks Terry and the KimKim team!!

Thanks to Terry and the entire KimKim team, our family had a fabulous time in Iceland. We knew we trusted Terry from the first time we spoke to her on the phone. She listened to us and understood what we were looking for in our vacation. Her attention to details allowed for a smooth, trouble free week in Iceland. The responsiveness of Terry and KimKim representatives exceeded our expectation. Needless to say, we will use KimKim again for our future vacations. We will recommend Terry to all of friends.
